Age Aggregation

Introduction

The Age Aggregation tool allows you to take one dataset and add multiple age columns together to create a new, aggregated column, for instance, taking two five year age groups (0 – 4 year old males and 5 – 9 year old males) and creating a ten year age group (0 – 9 year old males). The tool at this point can only be run on LGA or SLA datasets

Inputs

To show the tool in action, we will run it on some small area population projections at LGA level across Australia.

  • Select Australia as your area
  • Select LGA Small Area Population Projections 2006-2031 for Australia, selecting all attributes and setting your year to 2016
  • Upload a csv table that you will use to “map” the current columns into the new columns – it should look something like the table below. When you upload the table, you need to specify that it is Not Aggregated for its Aggregation Leveland the column that contains the mapping (i.e. the old columns to be combined – the second column named MAPPED_COLUMNS in the table below) needs to be specified as the Key.

Once you have done this, open the Age Aggregation tool (Tools → Specialist Tools → Age Aggregation) and enter the parameters as shown in the image below (these are also explained below the image)

  • Input SAPP data: This is the dataset that contains your age aggregations that you would like to merge into larger aggregations. In this instance we select LGA Small Area Population Projections 2006-2031 for Australia
  • Age Group Mapping: This is the table that contains the mappings between the new columns and the old columns. In this instance we select the table that we uploaded called Mapped_Age_Groups
  • LGA or SLA data: We specify whether or not our data will be at SLA or LGA level. In this instance we select LGA

Once you have entered your parameters, click  Add and Run to execute the tool.

Outputs

Once your tool has run, click the Display  button on the pop up dialogue box that appears to open the new table. It should look something like the table below

You can see that the columns now contain values that are the sums of the values in the mapped columns
